~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington is excited to announce the unveiling of a new public art installation, OT 987, by Berlin-based artist Stefan Reiss. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 10, 2025, from 6-9 p.m. at the intersection of Makers Way and Tenth Street in the Trades District.

The event will feature remarks from Mayor Kerry Thomson, Reiss himself, and members of the Bloomington Arts Commission at 6:15 p.m. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception on site and at The Forge located at 617 N Madison Street. Attendees can expect music by DJ Good Peoples and food provided by Self-Titled Vegetarian Kitchen & Catering. This event is free and open to all, but RSVPs are requested.

OT 987 is a large-scale interactive sculpture that combines technology with traditional sculpture techniques. Made from steel beams painted in vibrant colors inspired by Reiss's custom "color alphabet," the piece features intersecting triangular structures of varying heights. Embedded LED lights create a dynamic display of changing colors that fill the surrounding space with energy.

This project was made possible through Bloomington's One Percent for the Arts Ordinance, which designates one percent of eligible City construction costs towards public art. Out of over 70 international applicants who responded to a public call for qualifications, OT 987 was selected for its bold presence and ability to reflect the spirit of innovation in the Trades District.

After a four-week public comment period and review of over 350 community responses, Reiss's design was chosen as it aligns with the City's goal to integrate art into civic spaces and promote economic vitality, creativity, and cultural inclusion through public engagement.

The City invites all members of the community to join in this celebration of art and innovation on April 10th. This installation serves as a testament to Bloomington's commitment to supporting the arts and creating vibrant public spaces for all to enjoy.
