South Bend: Construction at Ireland and Ironwood Intersection Moves into Phase 4 Starting Wednesday, May 21

Trending...
May 20, 2025 ~ As the Ireland Road and Ironwood Drive Intersection Improvement Project enters its fourth phase, drivers can expect changes to the southwest corner of the intersection. According to officials, work will begin on or after Wednesday, May 21.

During this phase, traffic at the intersection will be limited to one through lane and one left turn lane. Additionally, eastbound traffic on Ireland Road will not be able to turn right onto Ironwood Drive. To accommodate for this, a detour route has been established. Drivers will be directed to travel east on Ireland Road, then south on Bremen Highway before reconnecting with Ironwood Drive via the US 20 Bypass.

To ensure access to all businesses in the affected areas, construction crews have made arrangements to maintain accessibility during the project.

The overall project includes a complete reconstruction of pavement, realignment of curbs, and upgraded traffic signals. Divided into six phases, each stage is estimated to take up to 21 days to complete, weather permitting. As construction progresses through each phase, traffic restrictions and closures will vary. If all goes according to plan, the project is expected to be completed by early July.
