~ In a joint effort, officials from the City of Bloomington, Monroe County, and the Bloomington City Council have signed a letter expressing their support for the establishment of a new Economic Development District (EDD) in South Central Indiana. The proposed EDD would encompass Brown, Monroe, and Owen Counties, which are known for their shared economic strengths and collaborative efforts.
The letter, addressed to the United States Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA), highlights the potential benefits of formalizing regional cooperation in economic development. The signatories emphasized the area's robust life sciences, higher education, technology, and defense sectors, as well as its historical significance in the limestone industry that has shaped the region for over two centuries.
Mayor Kerry Thomson of Bloomington stated in her letter that the counties not only share a labor shed but also a rich history and regional beauty. She also noted the economic benefits brought by Indiana University. Mayor Thomson highlighted how Bloomington has already experienced significant advantages from the EDA's support of the Trades District Technology Center or The Forge. This center received a $3.5 million CARES Act Grant which has helped catalyze growth in their tech ecosystem and strengthened regional partnerships.

Mayor Thomson stressed the importance of having a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) document in place. She believes that with a CEDS, they will be better positioned to apply for future funding opportunities and maximize their impact across the region. This will particularly benefit workforce and sector development, climate action initiatives, and enhance their transportation corridor.
In conclusion, Mayor Thomson expressed her full support for creating this Economic Development District and looks forward to continuing their partnership with the Economic Development Administration to drive growth and prosperity for their region.
Jane Kupersmith, Director of Bloomington's Economic and Sustainability Department expressed gratitude for Marce King's leadership from Owen County Chamber and EDC. She also thanked community leaders from Bloomington, Monroe County, Brown County, and Ellettsville for their support. Kupersmith believes that this regional approach represents a significant change and should be celebrated.
