~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington is seeking community input for a new mural design to be placed on the Duke Energy Substation walls at the intersection of W. 11th St and N Rogers St. The public is invited to view the proposed design and provide feedback on a designated webpage from Wednesday, Aug. 14 to Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024.
The theme for the mural was derived from a community-based survey and focuses on two main points: highlighting the natural surroundings of the Maple Heights neighborhood and emphasizing diversity and a sense of belonging within the Bloomington community.
The proposed design captures the essence of both Maple Heights and Bloomington by featuring native plants, insects, and iconic cats that symbolize our connection to local nature. At its core, the mural showcases a porch party scene that extends into the broader neighborhood, representing a sense of togetherness and celebration. This artwork serves as a reminder of our shared community and history.

The design is a collaboration between three local artists who have combined their unique styles to create a cohesive representation of unity within a community. The mural will be placed on the south-facing side of the structure and will measure approximately 64 feet by 16 feet.
Residents can look forward to participating in a community paint day during fall 2024 when the mural will be painted. The exact date will be announced at a later time.
This project was initiated by the City of Bloomington in partnership with Duke Energy, who has generously provided a grant of $25,000 to support this public art project. Due to the size of the structure, this mural project will be carried out in multiple installations with this being the first of five planned murals.
For each installation, a group of artists will be selected to develop a design that reflects the overall theme of highlighting nature and diversity within our community. The Duke Energy Substation walls located at W 11th St and N Rogers St will serve as a canvas for these murals, adding vibrancy and beauty to the area.
The City of Bloomington encourages all residents to visit the designated webpage and provide feedback on the proposed design. This mural project is a testament to the city's commitment to promoting community engagement and celebrating diversity through public art.
