The City of Bloomington Provides Fall and Winter Guidelines for Leaf Management, Sidewalks, and Storm Drains

Trending...
~ After two years of careful study and taking into account feedback from thousands of residents, the City of Bloomington has announced that they will be discontinuing curbside vacuum leaf collection as of 2023. This decision was made in an effort to find more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives for managing leaves.

One of the recommended options is for residents to mulch or compost leaves in their own yards, which not only reduces waste but also turns the leaves into natural fertilizer. To assist residents in learning more about this method, the City has provided online resources such as videos and articles.

For those who still prefer to have their leaves collected, the City offers biodegradable paper yard waste bags or yard waste carts. In November, there will be no fee for leaf collection, but starting in December, a fee of $1 per bag/cart will be implemented. To help with this transition, the Public Works Department will be partnering with the Fire Department to provide free brown paper leaf collection bags. These bags can be obtained at any City of Bloomington fire station on a first come, first serve basis with a limit of two packs per person. Proof of City residency is required and a map of fire station locations can be found on the City's website.

Residents are reminded to ensure that all yard waste carts or bags only contain dried leaves and are not compacted too tightly. Plastic bags will not be accepted.

For more information on purchasing an optional 64-gallon yard waste cart or finding your regular bi-weekly collection days, residents can contact the Sanitation Division at 812-349-3443 or use the myBloomington tool on the City's website.

In addition to managing leaves, residents are also encouraged to keep storm drains clear of leaves, grass clippings, and trash to prevent flooding. The City offers an Adopt-a-Drain program for those interested in maintaining specific drains.

Furthermore, it is important for residents and business owners to keep sidewalks clear of leaves, snow, and ice. Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after accumulation, with a 54-inch-wide path required in the downtown snow removal area and a 36-inch-wide path required in other areas.

For more information on these seasonal guidelines, residents can visit the City's website at bloomington.in.gov. Let's all do our part to keep Bloomington clean and safe for everyone.
