~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington, in collaboration with Heading Home of South Central Indiana and local housing service providers, will be hosting a community workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Monroe Convention Center to discuss strategies for reducing unsheltered homelessness. The event is open to the public and will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The workshop will kick off with a presentation of recommendations from Heading Home of South Central Indiana's Housing Action Plan. This will be followed by breakout sessions that will focus on priority needs identified by the organization. These include supporting robust and coordinated street outreach, strengthening diversion efforts to prevent homelessness, enacting a temporary moratorium on welcoming non-regional residents to overnight emergency shelters, increasing the number of affordable housing units, and determining the need for additional shelter beds.

The breakout sessions will be structured as roundtable discussions with participation from housing service providers. This format aims to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with each recommendation.

Earlier this year, Bloomington's housing service providers and Heading Home of South Central Indiana came together to develop an actionable plan to address street homelessness. The plan was created by a team of dedicated service providers including Melissa Burgess from HealthNet Homeless Initiative Program, Forrest Gilmore from Beacon Inc., Dana Jones from Wheeler Mission-Bloomington, Mary Morgan and Tatiana Wheeler from Heading Home of South Central Indiana, Emily Pike from New Hope for Families and chair of South Central Housing Network, and Carrie Stillions from Middle Way House.

Mayor Kerry Thomson expressed her support for this initiative stating that addressing homelessness is a collective responsibility that requires collaboration between individuals and organizations. She believes that this workshop is a critical step in creating meaningful change in the community through open dialogue and joint action.

The City of Bloomington encourages all members of the community to attend this workshop and provide their feedback on how best to address unsheltered homelessness in the city. Together, with the help of dedicated individuals and organizations, they hope to find effective solutions to this pressing issue.
