TEAMSTERS AT SYSCO HOUSTON AUTHORIZE STRIKE

Trending...
HOUSTON, Dec. 19, 2024 ~ In a recent vote, over 430 drivers, warehouse workers, and mechanics represented by Teamsters Local 988 have overwhelmingly authorized a strike against Sysco. This decision comes after the company failed to present an acceptable contract offer.

According to Robert Mele, President of Local 988, the demands of the workers are not unreasonable. They simply want fair wages, quality healthcare, and a secure retirement - things that every hardworking individual in this country deserves. Mele stated that if Sysco continues to refuse to take negotiations seriously, they will be held accountable for their greed.

The Teamsters union represents more than 10,000 workers at Sysco locations across the nation. Last year, similar contract disputes led to strikes in Indianapolis and Louisville. The picket lines expanded to include over 1,000 Sysco employees nationwide. After two weeks of striking, record-breaking contracts were secured.

Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, believes that Sysco has not learned from their past mistakes and continues to prioritize profits over their workers' well-being. He stated that they will not back down and are willing to do whatever it takes to bring the company to its knees and secure a fair contract for their members in Houston.

Members of Local 988 play a crucial role in supplying food and other products to major restaurant chains in the Houston area such as The Cheesecake Factory, Jersey Mike's, Jimmy John's, Buc-ee's, and Pappas Restaurants.

Charles Adams, a driver at Sysco and shop steward for Local 988 expressed that while they do not want to go on strike, they are prepared to hit the streets if necessary. He emphasized that all they are asking for is the ability to support their families and if Sysco does not give them what they deserve, they will have no one else but themselves to blame.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded in 1903 and currently represents 1.3 million hardworking individuals in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
