South Bend: Wall Street Streetscape Project to Begin August 4

August 1, 2025 ~ South Bend, IN - The City of South Bend has announced that construction will begin on streetscape improvements along Wall Street between Greenlawn Avenue and Ironwood Drive on Monday, August 4. This project is part of the River Park Neighborhood Plan and aims to enhance access to Potawatomi Park and Zoo, increase on-street parking for visitors, and improve pedestrian safety in the area.

The project includes the installation of two raised intersections and two raised crosswalks on Wall Street, as well as curb bumpouts and new sidewalks to improve walkability. Additionally, approximately 50 new on-street parking spaces will be added for park visitors. Other improvements include street repaving and new tree plantings. A refuge island will also be constructed at the intersection of Ironwood Drive and Wall Street to improve safety for pedestrians crossing Ironwood Drive.

The construction will be completed in two phases, with Phase 1 beginning on August 4 and expected to be completed by early September, weather permitting. During this phase, Wall Street will be closed between Greenlawn Avenue and Cesar Chavez Drive. The detour route will be Mishawaka Avenue via Ironwood and Twyckenham drives. This phase includes the installation of raised intersections and crossings with corner pedestrian safety bumpouts, a new sidewalk on the south side of Wall Street, new curbs on both sides of Wall Street, repaving of Wall Street, and the creation of 50 additional parking spaces.

During Phase 2, which is expected to begin in early September and be completed by early October, weather permitting, Wall Street from Cesar Chavez Drive to Ironwood Drive will be closed. This includes the intersection of Wall Street and Ironwood Drive. The project during this phase includes a median refuge island for pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Ironwood Drive and Wall Street, as well as new curbs and sidewalks on both sides of Wall Street.

The City of South Bend expects the project to be completed by early October, weather permitting. For more information on the project, residents can visit together.southbendin.gov/wall.
