March 25, 2025 ~ Starting Wednesday, March 26, motorists in the city of Springfield will have to navigate through traffic restrictions and lane closures at the intersection of Western Avenue and Chapin Street. This is due to an emergency sewer repair that needs to be carried out in the center and southern portions of the intersection.
According to city officials, the repairs are necessary to address a major issue with the sewer system. As a result, traffic from all directions will be impacted and drivers are advised to plan for detours and allow extra time for their commute.
For those traveling northbound on Chapin Street, they will only be able to turn east onto Western Avenue. To reach their destination, drivers will need to detour east on Western Avenue, then north on Main Street and finally west on Washington Street.

Similarly, southbound traffic on Chapin Street will only be able to turn west onto Western Avenue. Drivers will need to take a detour by heading west on Western Avenue, then south on Olive Street and finally east on Sample Street.
Motorists traveling westbound on Western Avenue will still be able to continue through the intersection but left turns onto Chapin Street will not be allowed. On the other hand, those heading eastbound on Western Avenue will only be able to turn south onto Chapin Street. Drivers who wish to proceed straight or turn north onto Chapin Street must take a detour by heading south on Chapin Street, then east on Sample Street and finally north on Main Street.
The repairs are expected to take approximately two weeks and weather permitting, the intersection is anticipated to fully reopen by Friday, April 11. City officials apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but assure that these repairs are necessary for the safety of residents.
