South Bend: Phase 3 Construction Begins at Ireland and Ironwood Intersection

Trending...
May 8, 2025 ~ Starting Friday, May 9, the intersection of Ireland Road and Ironwood Drive will enter its third phase of construction. As announced in a press release by the city officials on May 8, 2025, this phase will primarily focus on the center lanes of Ironwood Drive and the intersection itself.

During this phase, drivers can expect significant changes to traffic flow. Left turns will be prohibited from all directions at the intersection, and eastbound and westbound traffic will not be able to pass through. Instead, drivers on Ireland Road will only be allowed to turn right onto Ironwood Drive, while those on Ironwood Drive can continue straight or turn right.

To accommodate for these changes, detours have been put in place. Westbound traffic will be directed north on Ironwood Drive, then west on Lincoln Way East before turning south onto Miami Street to rejoin Ireland Road. Similarly, eastbound traffic will detour south on Ironwood Drive before taking the US 20 Bypass to the Bremen Highway Exit.

Despite these disruptions, access to all businesses in the affected areas will be maintained throughout construction. The project includes a full reconstruction of pavement, curb realignment, and upgraded traffic signals. Divided into six phases with an estimated completion time of 21 days each (weather permitting), this project is expected to be completed by early July.

City officials urge drivers to plan ahead and follow posted detours for a smoother commute during this construction period.
