South Bend: Ireland and Ironwood Intersection: Phase 2 Construction Begins

Trending...
April 18, 2025 ~ As the Ireland Road and Ironwood Drive Intersection Improvement Project enters its second phase, drivers in South Bend can expect some changes to their daily commute. The project, which began on April 18, 2025, will now shift its focus to the northeast corner of the intersection.

According to officials, this phase will involve limiting traffic through the intersection to one through lane and one left turn lane. Additionally, westbound traffic on Ireland Road will not be able to turn right onto Ironwood Drive. To accommodate for this change, a detour route has been established that will direct drivers west on Ireland Road, north on Miami Street, and then east on Lincoln Way East.

Despite these traffic restrictions and closures, access to all businesses in the impacted areas will be maintained during construction. The overall project includes a full reconstruction of the pavement, curb realignment, and upgraded traffic signals. It is divided into six phases with each phase estimated to take up to 21 days to complete, weather permitting.

The project is expected to be completed by early July if weather conditions allow. Drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly and follow all posted signs and detours for their safety and the safety of construction workers.
