March 25, 2025 ~ Beginning on Thursday, March 27, drivers in the South Bend area can expect temporary lane restrictions and closures as construction begins on the Ireland Road and Ironwood Road Intersection Improvement Project. The project, which has been in the works since September 2022, will involve a complete reconstruction of the pavement, realignment of curbs, and installation of new traffic signals.

According to officials, the $1.8 million project has been awarded to Milestone Contractors North, LLC and is expected to be completed by early July, weather permitting. The construction will be completed in six phases, with each phase estimated to take up to 21 days to finish.

During Phase 1 of the project, which will focus on the northwest side of the intersection, drivers can expect southbound traffic on Ironwood Road to be reduced to one through lane and one left-turn lane. Additionally, right turns onto Ireland Drive from southbound Ironwood Road will not be permitted. A graphic has been provided for further clarification.

To accommodate for these changes, a detour route has been established that will direct drivers south on Ironwood Road to Jackson Road and then onto Miami Street. However, access to all businesses in the impacted areas will still be maintained during construction.

The signal work at the intersection has already been completed prior to the start of this project. Officials are reminding drivers to plan for potential delays and follow all posted signs and detours while traveling through this area.
