~ On Thursday, the City of South Bend held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction at Kennedy Park. The $18 million project, which is expected to be completed in early July 2027, aims to completely transform the park and provide upgraded amenities, improved accessibility, and an enhanced experience for all residents.
According to Mayor James Mueller, these upgrades are a reflection of the city's dedication to creating vibrant and welcoming public spaces that bring communities together. He stated that this investment not only honors the park's history but also serves the needs of current and future generations.
The improvements at Kennedy Park include a brand-new aquatics facility, updated basketball and pickleball courts, an improved playground, enhanced green spaces, additional exterior lighting, an updated parking lot, picnic sites, new shelters, interconnected paved paths, and a new aquatics center featuring various amenities such as a low depth play area, swimming lanes, plunge slide, climbing wall, water basketball goals, and a concession stand.
