~ South Bend, Indiana - After years of planning and hard work, the City of South Bend is proud to announce the official opening of its new City Hall on Monday, October 13. Located at 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, this new facility will serve as a central hub for all city services and meetings.

Mayor James Mueller expressed his excitement for the opening, stating, "This consolidation of departments reflects our commitment to better government, achieving efficiencies and establishing a new city service center for residents." The City team has been working tirelessly to make this vision a reality.

The idea for the new City Hall came about when the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) announced their plans to move into the Brown Community Learning Center building in October 2022. The City saw an opportunity to purchase the former SBCSC administration building and awarded the renovation contract to Larson-Danielson Construction Co in 2024.

All City offices that were previously housed in the County-City Building will now be located at City Hall. This includes departments such as the Building Department, 311 Customer Service, and Water Works Billing Office. In addition, all public city meetings will now take place in City Hall's Council Chambers on the third floor starting in November. However, any meetings scheduled for October will still be held at the County-City Building. Residents are reminded to check public meeting notices for location information during this transition period.

It's important to note that County services such as tax payments, immunizations, birth certificates, and other related needs will continue to be available at the County-City Building as they are not relocating.

Eric Horvath, Public Works Director, believes that this new City Hall marks a significant step forward in how they serve residents. "With services under one roof," he says," we're streamlining operations and making it easier for residents to access the services they need."

One of the most exciting features of the new City Hall is the City Customer Service Center located in the lobby. This center will provide residents with quick and convenient access to a variety of services, including paying utility bills, obtaining building permits, and accessing program information. The center is staffed by 311 liaisons who will assist residents in person with their requests. Self-service kiosks are also available for routine service needs and payments.

To make things even more convenient for residents, the City Service Center offers a new scheduling system. This system allows residents to book an appointment ahead of their visit to City Hall, whether it's for a same-day appointment or one in advance. Real-time updates will be provided before and upon arrival.

Cathleen Sutherland, Director of Customer Service & Success, explains that they have been intentional in creating a space that is both efficient and welcoming for all South Bend residents. "We want every resident to feel seen, heard, and cared for," she says.

For those visiting City Hall, free 2-hour parking is available at the Wayne Street Garage next door at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Wayne Street. Free 2-hour street parking can also be found throughout downtown.

Upon entering City Hall, all visitors will need to go through a security check at the main entrance. This includes metal detector screening and possible bag searches.

City Hall will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with closures on Saturdays and Sundays. It will also be closed on federal holidays such as New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day (and the day after), and Christmas Day.
