South Bend: City Billboards to Honor Local African American Leaders

~ The City of South Bend has unveiled a series of billboards in honor of Black History Month, paying tribute to local African American leaders who have made significant contributions to the community's rich history and culture. The billboards, located at South Bend Ave. & Edison, South Bend Ave. & Ironwood Dr., and South Michigan and Ireland, will feature the honorees for one week starting Monday, February 17 until Sunday, February 23.

Mayor James Mueller expressed the importance of recognizing the achievements of Black leaders in the community. "It's important that we recognize the significant contributions that our Black leaders make in our community," he stated. "I am honored to provide this special thank you and recognition to these deserving leaders for their service and countless contributions to South Bend."

The honorees include Sy Barker, Reverend H. Gregory Haygood, Pastor Andre´ A. McGhee, Tracy Miller, Iris & Warren Outlaw, Derrick Perry, Andre Waddell, Jordan Gathers (recipient of the Leaders Under 40 Award), Bernita A. Johnson (recipient of the Obama Award), Edward Myers (recipient of the Trailblazer Award), and Vivica A. Fox (recipient of the Special Tribute).

To celebrate their achievements, Mayor James Mueller will host an Awards Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, February 20 at 6:00pm at the Century Center's Discovery Ballroom (120 S Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd.). This event is free and open to the public.

The City of South Bend hopes that these billboards and awards will not only honor these exceptional individuals but also inspire future generations to continue making positive contributions to their community during Black History Month and beyond.
