June 2, 2026 ~ South Bend, IN - The City of South Bend Department of Public Works has announced several upcoming trail improvements and street closures that will enhance the city's outdoor spaces for residents and visitors alike.
One of the major projects currently underway is the construction of improvements along the East Race Waterway. This includes replacing the wooden boardwalk between Seitz Park and Howard Park with a 14-foot-wide concrete sidewalk. In addition, the bridge over the waterway will be replaced, along with the temporary dock being upgraded to a new, wider, ADA-accessible dock. Stairway access to the Jefferson Bridge will also be added, as well as replacement of stairs on the south side of Jefferson Boulevard that connect to Howard Park. These enhancements are expected to be completed by May 2027.
Due to this construction, portions of the East Bank Trail near Seitz Park will be closed for safety reasons. However, Seitz Park itself will remain open for programming and concessions during this time.

Another project in progress is streetscape improvements along Madison Street from Hill Street west to the St. Joseph River. This includes a 10-foot multipurpose path on the south side of the street, as well as new lighting, landscaping, and storm sewer work. Currently, the intersection at Niles Avenue and Madison Street is closed for this work but is expected to reopen by Tuesday, June 30 (weather permitting). Once completed, this multipurpose path will connect the East Bank Trail to The Link Trail. The entire project is set to be finished by July 31.
In addition to these ongoing projects, Western Avenue between Dundee Street and Bendix Drive is currently closed for concrete patching work starting today (June 2). The detour route is via Sample Street using Olive Street or Mayflower Road. Weather permitting, Western Avenue is expected to reopen by end of day on Friday, June 12.
These improvements are part of South Bend's ongoing efforts to enhance its outdoor spaces and provide more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the city's natural beauty. The Department of Public Works encourages everyone to be patient and follow detour signs during these construction projects.
