July 26, 2024 ~ Starting Monday, July 29, the City of South Bend will experience some traffic changes due to ongoing construction and maintenance work. The Department of Public Works has announced that Cleveland Road from Portage Avenue to Shellbark Avenue will be restricted from four lanes to two lanes. This is due to NIPSCO's gas main work related to their new substation.
To ensure the safety of drivers and workers, the eastbound lanes will be converted to maintain two-way traffic. These restrictions will remain in place until Friday, August 16, with weather permitting.

In addition, Washington Street from Main Street to Lafayette Boulevard will be closed for crane work related to construction at the Liberty Tower. The detour route for this closure will be Colfax Avenue via Lafayette Boulevard and Main Street. Drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly as Washington Street is expected to reopen by the end of the day on Friday, August 2, weather permitting.
The Department of Public Works urges drivers to use caution and follow all posted signs and detours during these traffic changes. They also remind everyone that these projects are subject to change based on weather conditions. Stay updated on any further developments by following the City of South Bend's official channels.
