~ Bloomington, IN - The Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) has taken a significant step towards promoting inclusivity in the city by releasing a new resource. The Accessible and Inclusive Events Checklist is designed to assist event planners in ensuring that public and private events in Bloomington are accessible and welcoming to individuals with disabilities.
The comprehensive checklist covers key areas such as scheduling, marketing, venue selection, food and drink planning, technological accommodations, and attendee engagement. It aims to address the often-overlooked barriers that can prevent community members with disabilities from fully participating in events.
According to the CCA, this initiative aligns with Bloomington's ongoing efforts to prioritize inclusivity in all aspects of community life. By providing practical tools for event organizers, the CCA hopes to empower them to make accessibility a priority rather than an afterthought.
The checklist includes actionable steps for event hosts, such as including clear accessibility accommodation statements in promotional materials, proactively addressing common barriers like physical access and dietary restrictions, and providing opportunities for attendees to request specific accommodations in advance.

The checklist is now available on the CCA's webpage for community members and event organizers to review. The organization encourages individuals to reach out with any questions, feedback or suggestions they may have.
Michael Shermis, staff liaison for the CCA, emphasized the importance of accessibility in creating an inclusive community. "Accessibility isn't just about compliance - it's about making Bloomington more inclusive for everyone," he said. "This checklist gives organizers practical tools to ensure their events are accessible and welcoming for as many people as possible."
The CCA is a volunteer-driven initiative that advocates for individuals with disabilities across the city. They welcome new members who are interested in contributing to their mission. Their monthly meetings take place on the last Monday of every month at City Hall (Allison Room) from 4:00-5:30 p.m., with the next one scheduled for November 25th.
For more information or to inquire about accessibility for an event, individuals can contact the CCA at cca@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3478. The organization is committed to promoting awareness and advocating for individuals with disabilities in Bloomington.
