WASHINGTON, Aug. 26, 2024 ~ The National Park Foundation (NPF) has received a monumental grant of $100 million from Lilly Endowment Inc., marking the largest grant ever received by NPF and the largest grant benefiting national parks. This historic grant is a significant step towards safeguarding the future of America's treasured national parks.
From majestic mountains to vibrant coral reefs to iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial, national parks are home to breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural heritage. However, these cherished places are facing numerous challenges that threaten their existence.
Thanks to the generous support of Lilly Endowment, NPF will be able to address these challenges and make a lasting impact. Will Shafroth, president and CEO of the National Park Foundation, expressed his gratitude for this extraordinary gift, stating that private philanthropy has played a crucial role in bridging the gap between park needs and available funding for over 50 years. He believes that this grant will allow NPF to supercharge their efforts in ensuring that national parks remain accessible and preserved for generations to come.

The $100 million grant from Lilly Endowment will serve as a catalyst for NPF's work in four key priority areas. These include inspiring the next generation of park stewards by creating opportunities for youth and young adults to deepen their understanding of history, appreciate environmental stewardship, and connect with nature. The grant will also help conserve and preserve threatened parks and wildlife by addressing critical initiatives that ensure the health and longevity of fragile ecosystems and diverse species within national parks.
Additionally, NPF plans to use the funds to ensure a world-class visitor experience by leveraging new technology while maintaining accessibility for all visitors. The final priority area is telling a more complete story of America by delivering a comprehensive historical narrative that includes the experiences of communities whose voices have not been fully represented in American history.
N. Clay Robbins, chairman and CEO of Lilly Endowment, shared that their founders were passionate about preserving the natural world and promoting research and education about the cultural history of the nation. He believes that this grant will further their interests and enhance programming in national parks, monuments, and historic sites.
