Infrasense Carries Out Indiana Bridge Deck Condition Evaluations using Aerial Infrared Thermography

Trending...
INDIANAPOLIS, May 7, 2025 ~ A recent evaluation conducted by Infrasense has shed light on the condition of 227 bridge decks located along major corridors in Indiana. The assessment utilized aerial infrared (IR) data and high-resolution visual data collected from a fixed-wing aircraft, operated by a licensed pilot in accordance with all applicable FAA regulations.

The collected data consisted of a sequence of IR and visual images captured as the aircraft flew over each surveyed bridge. For shorter bridges, one image was typically sufficient to cover the entire structure and serve as the basis for analysis. However, for longer bridges, multiple images had to be stitched together to create a single composite plan-view image.

To further enhance the accuracy of the evaluation, proprietary software was used to analyze the pixels within the bridge deck. This included applying enhancements to increase contrast and remove thermal banding caused by structural elements such as girders or surface wearing in the wheelpaths. These enhancements allowed for easier identification and mapping of delaminations.

The aerial IR and visual plan-views were then thoroughly reviewed and analyzed to map areas of rebar-level delamination, patching, and spalling. The results were compiled into a comprehensive quantitative summary accompanied by corresponding plan-view maps.

This evaluation provides valuable insight into the condition of these 227 bridge decks, allowing for necessary repairs or maintenance to be identified and addressed in a timely manner. With Infrasense's expertise and advanced technology, this assessment serves as an important tool in ensuring safe and efficient transportation along major corridors in Indiana.
