Fort Wayne: CITY PREPARED FOR FORECASTED WEATHER EVENT

Trending...
~ Fort Wayne, IN - The City of Fort Wayne Street Department has taken proactive measures to prepare for the forecasted snow and freezing rain by pretreating the main arterial intersections with liquid brine. According to city officials, this will help keep the streets and roads as safe as possible for motorists.

In anticipation of the weather system, crews are on standby and ready to respond today and tonight. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling through Fort Wayne.

The city is divided into eighteen snow routes, with each route assigned a minimum of two trucks. These routes are prioritized based on street type - one for arterials, two for collectors and Citilink bus routes, and three for residential streets. Priority one streets will be the first to receive plowing and salting services.

Once priority one streets are deemed safe for travel during or after a snowfall, plow trucks will begin operations on priority two streets. If there is an accumulation of three inches or more of snow, trucks will then move on to residential streets.

In case of a snow event during plowing operations on priority two or three streets, if priority one streets become slippery again, trucks will be dispatched back to these areas as needed.

While every snow event is different, it typically takes 10-12 hours after the snow stops falling to plow and salt priority one and two streets. Residential streets may take up to 48 hours to be cleared if plow trucks can continue working without having to return to priority one or two streets.

The Street Department is responsible for maintaining 1,200 miles of streets and roads in Fort Wayne. For more information about their efforts during winter weather events, visit www.cityoffortwayne.org/snow.
