Evansville Named an IDEM Clean Community

~ Evansville, Indiana - The city of Evansville has been named the latest Clean Community in the state by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). This designation was officially announced during a ceremony at the Sunrise Pump Station on Wednesday, where Mayor Stephanie Terry accepted a Clean Community sign and flag from IDEM Commissioner Brian Rockensuess.

Mayor Terry expressed her excitement and gratitude for this recognition, stating that it acknowledges the city's efforts towards improving environmental quality and sustainability. She also acknowledged the hard work of the city's Clean Team, who played a crucial role in facilitating Evansville through this process.

The Clean Team includes Lauren Norvell, Climate Action Director for the City of Evansville's Climate Collaborative; Rob Flores, VP of Sustainability at Berry Global; Stacy Milheiser, Energy & Industrial Sector Client Manager at Lochmueller Group; Roger Cohen (LPG), Senior Project Manager at Weaver Consultants Group; Andrew Clark (MBA), Category Specialist at CRS OneSource; and Shannon Begeman, Project Manager at the City of Evansville Engineer's Office.

Evansville is now Indiana's ninth municipality to earn the Clean Community designation and is also the largest by population. Other cities that have received this recognition include Richmond, Merrillville, Zionsville, Fishers, Brown County, Beech Grove, Fortville and New Chicago.

IDEM Commissioner Brian Rockensuess expressed his delight in welcoming Evansville to the Clean Community Program. He stated that being a "Clean Community" sends a strong message to residents and visitors about their city's commitment to environmental stewardship. He also congratulated Evansville on their hard work to earn this recognition.

IDEM is inviting other municipalities and community partners who are interested in participating in this program to learn more at on.in.gov/cleancommunity. This program aims to recognize and support communities that prioritize environmental sustainability and climate resiliency.

With this new designation as a Clean Community, Evansville is determined to continue its efforts towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. Mayor Terry stated that while this recognition is a great achievement, it also serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. She emphasized that the city is just getting started on its journey towards environmental sustainability and climate resiliency.
