~ During the bimonthly Board of Public Works meeting this morning, City of Fishers staff announced their recommendation for a city-wide trash contract with Republic Services. This decision comes after a thorough public RFP process and careful consideration of various factors.
Republic Services was chosen as the recommended provider due to their competitive rates, long-standing presence in Central Indiana, and familiarity with the Fishers market. Currently, Republic serves nearly 60% of Fishers residents and has a strong reputation in the community.
If approved, the proposed 10-year contract would go into effect in January 2025. One of the main benefits of a city-wide contract is the ability for the City to assist residents with any trash concerns or issues that may arise. Additionally, it would reduce wear on neighborhood roadways and allow for leveraged economies of scale to secure services not currently offered to the majority of residents, such as leaf and landscaping pickup. The contract would also lock in rates for 10 years, providing stability for residents.

The decision to pursue a city-wide trash contract was based on feedback from a public survey conducted in 2023. The survey received responses from 2,532 residents and 120 HOAs, providing valuable insight into their current trash services and preferences. In March 2024, Fishers released an RFP for its first-ever city-wide trash contract, which included trash, recycling, and leaf and landscaping collection for all residential units in Fishers.
Out of three offers submitted, Republic Services offered the lowest monthly rates for residents in the first three years. They also have a unique "snowbird" feature that allows individuals to pause services while away from their residence for a month or longer.
Mayor Scott Fadness expressed his support for this initiative stating that it will help control rising costs for trash collection in the community and give them the ability to advocate for residents when issues or concerns arise. He also highlighted Republic's decades of experience serving Fishers and their competitive pricing and unique features that make them the best fit for the community.

According to the proposed contract, the monthly cost per household in 2025 would be $16.39. This rate is lower than what 85% of residents currently pay for services, as revealed by the public survey conducted last year. The survey showed that 70% of Fishers residents pay more than $21 per month for trash collection, while 22% pay between $31 and $40 per month, and 24% pay more than $41 per month for trash and recycling services. A full breakdown of proposed pricing over ten years can be found on FishersIN.gov/Trash.
The next steps in this process include a public hearing and contract approval at the Board of Public Works meeting on Tuesday, August 13. A final recommendation will then be presented to City Council this fall. Residents can learn more about this initiative at FishersIN.gov/Trash.
