Juneteenth ~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington is excited to announce their upcoming Juneteenth celebration, inviting the public to join in on the festivities. The event will take place on Friday, June 13 from 2 to 9 p.m. at Switchyard Park, located at 1601 S. Rogers St.

This free and family-friendly event aims to honor the history, resilience, and culture of Black Americans through a day filled with celebration, reflection, and community. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

The holiday holds significant importance as it marks the historic moment on June 19, 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to proclaim the freedom of enslaved Black Americans. This was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. While Juneteenth has long been celebrated by Black communities, it was officially recognized as the 11th federal holiday in 2021 due to its enduring significance in American history.
