~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington has recently announced a partnership with the South Central Community Action Program (SCCAP) to distribute $1 million in Economic Equity funds. This collaboration, which was revealed in December 2023, aims to provide support to local residents who are facing financial challenges. The funds will be managed by SCCAP's Growing Opportunities department and will be distributed in an equitable manner.
According to the partnership, half of the funds will be allocated towards alleviating medical debt, which is known to significantly impact family stability and well-being. The remaining half will address essential needs such as childcare arrears, property taxes, rental deposits, late fees, menstrual equity, and medically specific diets. These resources are crucial for creating and maintaining safe and healthy living conditions for residents.
Statistics show that approximately one in six Indiana residents struggle with medical debt in collections. In response to this issue, SCCAP's initiative will provide eligible Bloomington residents with grants and assistance from their Covering Kids and Families team. This support will help evaluate insurance needs and prevent future medical debt. Additionally, SCCAP will facilitate access to vital services including Energy Assistance, Weatherization, Housing Resources, and Early Childhood Education.

To ensure efficient distribution of the funds, SCCAP has partnered with local organizations for a phased rollout plan. Debt relief applications are now open and ongoing disbursements will continue until the funds are exhausted.
To qualify for these resources, applicants must be employed and reside or work within Bloomington's city limits. Funding decisions will be based on individual circumstances following an online application and interview with SCCAP staff. This partnership between the City of Bloomington and SCCAP highlights their commitment to supporting their community members during these challenging times. With these Economic Equity funds in place, they hope to alleviate financial burdens for those who need it most.
