Bloomington, Ind. ~ Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has once again proven its commitment to excellence by receiving re-accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) annual conference on September 15 in Orlando, Fla.

Out of the 213 parks departments nationwide that have earned accredited status, Bloomington Parks and Recreation is one of only three in Indiana. This marks the fifth time that the department has been accredited, with previous accreditations in 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016.

CAPRA accreditation is a prestigious recognition that measures an agency's overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. It is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies and signifies that an agency has met rigorous standards related to the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety, and services.

To achieve re-accreditation, Parks and Recreation had to demonstrate compliance with 68 recognized standards and provide documentation of all policies and procedures. This process not only highlights areas of excellence but also helps identify areas for improvement in order to provide higher-quality service to the community.

Leslie Brinson, Recreation Services Division Director expressed her pride in achieving re-accreditation by stating that "Reaccreditation is more than a mark of distinction. It's a reflection of our department's unwavering commitment to excellence." She also emphasized how CAPRA accreditation demonstrates their responsibility to serve the community with integrity, transparency, and exceptional parks and recreation services.

Mayor Kerry Thomson also praised the department's dedication to building a community that not only uses their parks but loves them as well. He stated that "Accreditation honors the daily work that often goes unseen" such as thoughtful design, accessible trails, well-run programs, and the kindness shown by staff and volunteers. He believes that these are the true measures of a parks system and how it serves people every day, in every season.

The accreditation process involves a formal application, self-assessments, a site visit by a team of trained volunteers resulting in a written report, and a hearing with CAPRA to grant accreditation. The Commission is made up of representatives from various organizations such as NRPA, the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, and the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials.
