City of Bloomington Launches Crash Hub to Improve Traffic Safety Awareness

Trending...
~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington has recently launched a new online resource, the Crash Hub, in an effort to improve traffic safety awareness and support data-driven decision-making for safer streets. This interactive platform provides access to comprehensive crash data and includes tools such as the Crash Dashboard and Safe Streets for All Priority Corridors and Intersections maps.

According to Meghan Blair, GIS Manager for the city, the data on the Crash Hub covers a span of five years from 2019 to 2023 and includes information on vehicle, pedestrian, and bike crashes across Monroe County. This comprehensive view of traffic incidents aims to help identify high-risk areas and guide future safety improvements.

The development of the Crash Hub was made possible by the dedication of Charlie Moore and Max Stier, ITS GIS Specialists, as well as data cleaning efforts from Katie Gandhi, MPO Transportation Planner. The launch of this hub aligns with the City of Bloomington's broader Safe Streets for All Initiative which focuses on reducing accidents and enhancing mobility through infrastructure improvements and community engagement.

The collaboration between the Planning & Transportation, Engineering, and Information & Technology Services (ITS) Departments resulted in access to State of Indiana crash data on the Crash Hub. This will also highlight priority areas for safety improvements.

David Hittle, Planning & Transportation Department Director stated that with the adoption of the Safe Streets For All plan, safety has become a key determinant in deciding how resources are directed towards transportation improvements. He also emphasized that making this data publicly accessible through the Crash Dashboard will aid in supporting these decisions.

Future developments from the Safe Streets for All Action Plan include securing additional funding, advancing planning efforts, and implementing targeted safety measures to enhance Bloomington's transportation network. The next phase for the Crash Hub will include incorporating 2024 crash data in the fourth quarter of 2025 and developing new bicycle- and pedestrian-oriented maps to better visualize mobility patterns and risks.

The City of Bloomington encourages residents, transportation planners, and safety advocates to explore the Crash Hub and utilize it as a resource to support a safer and more connected community. The Crash Hub can be accessed through the city's website.
