~ Bloomington, Indiana - The City of Bloomington has launched a new pilot program aimed at promoting sustainable transportation options for low-income residents. The e-Bike Voucher Program offers qualified individuals up to $2,000 in point-of-purchase vouchers that can be used towards the purchase of an e-bike at local bike shops.

To be eligible for the program, low-income residents must first register for Go Bloomington and Zero In Bloomington, two initiatives focused on reducing single occupancy vehicle (SOV) use and household carbon emissions. Go Bloomington promotes sustainable mobility options such as walking, biking, public transit, and carpooling, while Zero In Bloomington provides personalized recommendations for reducing household carbon emissions.

According to the City's Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Program Manager, the e-bike voucher program aligns with their mission to decrease SOV use in the community. "By shifting to using e-bikes instead of vehicles, qualified low-income residents can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in our city," they stated.

The program also supports Bloomington's goal to decrease on-road vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by 8% of 2018 values. This reduction in VMT will not only decrease carbon emissions but also alleviate traffic congestion and improve parking availability.

Interested individuals can visit gobloomington.org and zeroinbloomington.com to register for Go Bloomington and Zero In Bloomington respectively. Once registered, they can complete an application for the e-bike voucher program.

Local bike shops participating in the program include Bicycle Garage, Bloomington Bicycles, and Revolution Bike and Bean. These shops offer a variety of e-bikes to choose from, making it easier for qualified low-income residents to find one that fits their needs.
