City of Bloomington Celebrates Black History Month with Poster Contest and Community Events

~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington's Black History Month Committee is excited to announce the upcoming 2025 Black History Month Poster Contest and a series of events celebrating Black history, culture, and contributions. This year's theme, "African Americans and Labor: From Slave Ships to the White House," will highlight the significant role of Black Americans in shaping industries, communities, and civil rights movements throughout history.

The Poster Contest & Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at City Hall (401 N. Morton St.). The event will begin with a noon reception followed by the award ceremony at 1 p.m. Students from grades 4-12 are invited to participate by presenting their research and creative work. Prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions in each age category, with first-place winners receiving an iPad and additional cash prizes for second and third place. This event is free and open to the public.

Interested students can find contest details at bloomington.in.gov/bhm. In addition to the Poster Contest & Awards Ceremony, there are several other events planned for Black History Month.

On Saturday, February 15 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., City Hall will host the Black Market event. This showcase will feature Black-owned businesses, creators, and organizations honoring the legacy of Bloomington's original Black Market which was tragically firebombed in 1968.

The following week on Saturday, February 22 at noon, City Hall will hold a special ceremony recognizing student creativity and historical research with the winners of the 2025 Poster Contest.

The month-long celebration will conclude with a Gala on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m. at Monroe Convention Center. The evening will include dining, music, and recognition of the 2025 Living Legend recipients and Outstanding Black Leaders of Tomorrow.
