~ The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission is calling on local students in grades K-6 to participate in its annual Youth Art & Essay Contest. This year's theme is "How does diversity make our community stronger?" and the submission deadline is March 12, 2025.
According to Michael Shermis, the Human Rights Commission liaison, the goal of the contest is to encourage students to reflect on human rights, equality, and the value of an inclusive community. With ongoing conversations about diversity, the commission hopes to emphasize the importance of valuing different backgrounds and perspectives.
Students can submit their artwork or a short essay (maximum of one page) via email or by dropping off their entries at City Hall. The submissions should include the student's name, grade, school, and contact information for a parent, guardian, or teacher.
