The resident ~ Bloomington, IN - The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission, led by residents of the community, will be hosting its Annual Commemoration on Monday, January 19 at 6 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. This event is free and open to the public.
This year's program will focus on honoring the contributions of women in the civil rights movement with the theme "Soul, Spirit & Sacrifice: Honoring the Legacy of Coretta Scott King and the Women Who Faced America to Save U.S." The keynote speaker for the evening will be Dr. Traci Parker, an Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Davis.
Dr. Parker is a renowned historian, speaker, and author whose work centers around African American history and the civil rights movement. She also explores how everyday life and consumer culture intersect with public life. Currently, she is working on a comprehensive biography of Coretta Scott King based on rare archival materials.

The program will also feature musical performances by the Indiana University African American Choral Ensemble directed by Dr. Raymond Wise and internationally renowned opera singer Marietta Simpson.
During the event, the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award will be presented to individuals, businesses or organizations whose work reflects Dr. King's values.
In addition to the annual celebration, members of the community are invited to participate in Martin Luther King Jr.'s 40 Days of Peace volunteer opportunities.
