Bloomington: Reconstructed Rail Trail Crossing Opens; B-Line Trail North Extension Nears Completion

Trending...
~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has recently completed the reopening of the Rail Trail crossing of South Rogers St. with new safety and accessibility improvements. The project, which was approved by the Board of Park Commissioners in September, aimed to reconstruct the formerly diagonal crossing to allow trail users to cross South Rogers Street perpendicular to traffic just south of West Baywood Drive.

The improvements not only shorten the amount of time needed for trail users to cross the road, but also improve sightlines for both drivers and trail users. The project included widening and paving the trail on both sides of South Rogers Street and was completed by Milestone Contractors at a cost of $212,280.

The project was planned to coincide with the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) at the crossing by the Monroe County Highway Department. While the trail has reopened, there are still some aspects of the project that are in progress. These include activating the RRFBs, re-striping the crossing, installing a new streetlight, and restoring and stabilizing turf. These items are expected to be completed in early 2026.

In addition to this project, the City of Bloomington Engineering Department is overseeing another project called the B-Line Connection Project. This project aims to connect the existing B-Line Trail terminus at Adams Street with the multi-use path on the 17th Street I-69 overpass.

The construction of a multi-use path along West Fountain Drive and North Crescent Road was completed in 2024 by Milestone Contractors. They have also recently finished constructing a new 0.1-mile stretch of the B-Line Trail that connects this new multi-use path to the existing B-Line trailhead at North Adams Street. This section is now open for use and brings the total length of the B-Line Trail to 3.2 miles.

However, there are still some aspects of this project that are yet to be completed, such as tree planting and activating the light poles. These are expected to be finished in early 2026.

For the most up-to-date information on these projects, residents can follow Parks and Recreation on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BloomingtonParksandRecreationDepartment or call 812-349-3700. The City of Bloomington is committed to improving safety and accessibility for all trail users and will continue to work towards enhancing the city's recreational spaces.
