~ Bloomington, Indiana - The city of Bloomington has been recognized as the latest Clean Community by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). This prestigious designation is awarded to municipalities that demonstrate a proactive and positive approach towards addressing community and social issues through sustainable environmental and wellness projects.

Established in the early 2000s, the Clean Community Program (formerly known as the Clean Community Challenge) aims to promote a better quality of life for all Hoosiers and a healthy economy. Bloomington Stormwater Education Specialist Kriste Lindberg proudly represented the city at the 2024 Clean Community Program Annual Meeting in October, where she accepted signs and a commemorative flag from IDEM.

"We are thrilled to welcome Bloomington to the Clean Community Program," stated IDEM Commissioner Brian Rockensuess. "Being a 'Clean Community' sends a powerful message to residents and visitors that their city values environmental stewardship. I congratulate Bloomington on their hard work in earning this recognition."

The Clean Community Program has three levels of recognition: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. All municipalities start at the Bronze level, but Bloomington is already working towards achieving Silver status. The city is currently in the process of creating a Clean Team made up of local stakeholders and developing sustainability projects that will help them progress to the next level.

"The City of Bloomington is delighted to join IDEM's Clean Community Program!" exclaimed Lindberg, who is leading the effort through the Utilities Department's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) Program. "This timely endeavor provides ample opportunity to strengthen relationships between the public and private sectors for a win-win. We look forward to working with all for the benefit of our environment."

Bloomington joins nine other municipalities in Indiana that have earned the Clean Community designation: Richmond, Merrillville, Zionsville, Fishers, Brown County, Beech Grove, Fortville, New Chicago, and Evansville.
