~ Bloomington, Indiana - The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission proudly announced today that the city has once again achieved a perfect score of 100/100 on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation's 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). This marks the tenth consecutive year that Bloomington has received this top score, solidifying its commitment to LGBTQ+ equality.
The MEI evaluates 506 cities across America to assess how inclusive their laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ+ residents. Criteria include non-discrimination laws, access to municipal services for LGBTQ+ individuals, and the public stance of city leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. This year, a record-breaking 130 cities earned a perfect score.
According to Ryne Shadday, Chair of the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission, this achievement is crucial now more than ever. "Our LGBTQ+ community needs our city to stand firm in its core values that have been in place for over 50 years," Shadday stated. "While we are proud of our MEI score, there is always room for improvement. We must continue to show that we will not let our most vulnerable citizens down during one of the most critical times in our country and state's history."
