~ Bloomington, Indiana - The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission proudly announced today that the city has once again achieved a perfect score of 100/100 on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation's 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). This marks the tenth consecutive year that Bloomington has received this top score, solidifying its commitment to LGBTQ+ equality.
The MEI evaluates 506 cities across America to assess how inclusive their laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ+ residents. Criteria include non-discrimination laws, access to municipal services for LGBTQ+ individuals, and the public stance of city leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. This year, a record-breaking 130 cities earned a perfect score.
According to Ryne Shadday, Chair of the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission, this achievement is crucial now more than ever. "Our LGBTQ+ community needs our city to stand firm in its core values that have been in place for over 50 years," Shadday stated. "While we are proud of our MEI score, there is always room for improvement. We must continue to show that we will not let our most vulnerable citizens down during one of the most critical times in our country and state's history."

Bloomington has consistently been recognized for its dedication to LGBTQ+ equality over the past decade and remains the only city in Indiana to receive a perfect score in 2024. This accomplishment is even more impressive considering state policies that limit inclusivity.
The full 2024 MEI report can be found on the Human Rights Campaign's website. The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission's mission is to enforce the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Ordinance fairly and promptly, educate community members about their rights and responsibilities under various civil rights laws, and advocate for changes in policies and laws.
With its unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ equality, Bloomington continues to set an example for other cities across the nation. The city's perfect score on the MEI is a testament to its dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable community for all.
