Bloomington: Project 46 Releases Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory and High-Impact Actions Report

Trending...
~ The Project 46 Southern Indiana Regional Climate Alliance has recently released its 2022 Inventory of Community-Wide Greenhouse Gas Emissions and High Impact Actions Analysis, in partnership with Farallon Strategies and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. This report aims to identify the primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the region and highlight effective actions to reduce emissions and build a more resilient future.

According to the analysis, the Project 46 region produced 4.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022. The largest contributors to these emissions were gasoline and diesel vehicles, accounting for 35 percent, followed by electricity and natural gas usage in residential (20 percent) and commercial (15 percent) buildings.

The report also projects that under current trends, including improvements in vehicle fuel efficiency, grid modernization, and existing policies, the region is expected to reduce emissions by 33 percent by 2030. However, if all recommended high-impact actions are implemented, an additional 6 percent reduction can be achieved, resulting in a total decrease of 39 percent in emissions by 2030.

The analysis identifies three actions with the greatest potential impact: increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), conducting energy efficiency retrofits in residential and commercial buildings, and diverting waste to composting and recycling instead of landfills.

Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson, a member of Project 46's Steering Committee, stated that "climate work gives us a compass." He believes that when communities come together to address climate change, it creates a better place for people to live, work, and dream. The collaboration between neighbors, cities, and counties is what makes Project 46 promising as it turns ideas into action for a more resilient southern Indiana.

The Midwest is already experiencing the effects of shifting climate patterns such as changes in agricultural productivity and infrastructure challenges due to rising temperatures. By taking bold and collaborative action now through Project 46, members can help protect the region while also promoting economic and environmental progress.
