Bloomington, Ind. ~ Bloomington, Ind. - In an effort to improve safety and enhance the city's tree canopy, Parks and Recreation has recently launched the Tree Assistance Program (TAP). This new initiative aims to assist qualifying homeowners in removing or pruning hazardous trees and planting new ones on their private property.
The program is open to homeowners who own and reside at the property where the work will take place, as long as it is within Bloomington city limits. Eligibility for the program is based on income, with a single-income household needing to earn less than $63,000 annually and a multiple-income household earning less than $72,300 annually.

Interested applicants can submit their applications, along with proof of income, until October 1st. A review committee consisting of staff from various departments including Housing & Neighborhood Development, Planning & Transportation, Economic & Sustainable Development, and Parks and Recreation will evaluate and prioritize requests. The committee will also include a representative from the Bloomington Tree Commission.
Approved projects for tree removal, pruning, and planting will be contracted by Parks and Recreation for spring 2026. The Board of Park Commissioners gave their approval for TAP on July 17th. For more information or to apply for the Tree Assistance Program, interested individuals can visit the Parks and Recreation website or contact Urban Forester Haskell Smith via email.
