Bloomington: Griffy Lake Nature Preserve Closed for Deer Hunt Dec. 2-3

Trending...
Bloomington, Ind. ~ The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation has announced that Griffy Lake Nature Preserve will be closed to the public from 11 p.m. Dec. 1 through 5 a.m. Dec. 4 for the final weekend of deer hunting in 2023. Only hunters who applied and were selected to participate in the hunt are permitted to hunt at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, as public hunting is not allowed.

The goal of the annual deer hunts is to reduce deer browse pressure on understory plants and seedling trees, allowing them to recover and reproduce within the preserve. During the first deer hunt weekend Nov. 18-19, 25 deer were harvested from Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation has been actively managing the deer population at Griffy Lake with sharpshoots or hunts since 2017, with data available online at bloomington.in.gov/boards/deertaskforce/griffy-lake for those interested in learning more about it.
