~ Bloomington, IN - The Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission is currently seeking nominations for the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award. This prestigious award recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations that embody the values and principles of Dr. King.
The Commission, a resident-led advisory body, is dedicated to promoting diversity and advocating for justice and racial harmony within the Bloomington community. According to Dr. Gloria Howell, a member of the Commission, their goal is to honor Dr. King's legacy by celebrating his life and work.
Nominations for the Legacy Award can be submitted online at bton.in/26legacy until December 1, 2025. Eligible nominees must be residents of Monroe County or local organizations with at least one year of service.

The award will be presented at the City's annual community-wide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in January, which is free and open to all residents.
In addition to the Legacy Award, the Commission also supports various initiatives such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the 40 Days of Peace service projects. They also organize the community-wide King Birthday Celebration.
Past recipients of the Legacy Award include notable individuals such as Beverly Calender-Anderson, Sarah McCue, Nancy Cross-Harris, Jeanetta Nelms, Marvin Q. Jones, as well as organizations like Bloomington United and Indiana University Office of Diversity Education.
