Bloomington, Ind. ~ Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department is taking proactive measures to maintain the plant and habitat diversity at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. As part of this effort, managed deer hunts have been scheduled to take place over two weekends: November 15 and 16, and November 22 and 23.

According to officials, only hunters who have applied and been selected will be allowed to participate in the hunt at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. The preserve will remain closed to public hunting during this time.

To ensure the safety of both hunters and the public, Griffy Lake Nature Preserve will be closed to all visitors starting at 11 p.m. on the Friday before each hunt until 5 a.m. on the Monday after. This includes all trails and the entire lake. Additionally, no shoreline fishing or watercraft launching will be permitted during these weekends.

The primary goal of these annual deer hunts is to reduce deer browse pressure on understory plants and seedling trees within the preserve. This will allow for native plant communities to recover and thrive in their natural habitat.

The Parks and Recreation Department has been actively managing the deer population at Griffy Lake since 2017 through sharpshoots or hunts. Interested individuals can view data on deer harvests as well as results from a plant height study conducted at Griffy Lake.
