~ The City of Bloomington's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team has been recognized for their outstanding use of geospatial technology by the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC). The team was awarded the 2026 Excellence in GIS - Large Community award for their innovative Bloomington Housing Dashboard.
This prestigious award is given to organizations that utilize GIS technology to better serve their communities. It highlights the City's ongoing dedication to using GIS tools to improve public safety, increase data transparency, and aid in community planning. The Bloomington Housing Dashboard is a user-friendly tool that combines housing and demographic data, providing residents, staff, elected officials, and community partners with a comprehensive understanding of local housing conditions and trends.
Meghan Blair, the GIS Manager, expressed her excitement about receiving this award for the third consecutive year. She stated that it not only recognizes the team's technical work but also addresses the real need for accessible and clear housing data among Bloomington residents and city staff. The Housing Dashboard brings together census trends, building permits, and demolitions in one convenient location, allowing for a better understanding of how the community is evolving.

GIS technology enables the capture, storage, manipulation, analysis, and presentation of spatial or geographical data. The City of Bloomington has been utilizing these tools since the early 1990s and has recently updated its GIS platform to develop interactive applications that cater to user needs.
The City's GIS team is responsible for maintaining the central enterprise geodatabase, updating datasets, creating cartographic maps, conducting data analysis, and developing web mapping services and applications. The GeoHub website showcases various city data and applications in an easy-to-navigate format.
The development of the Housing Dashboard was a collaborative effort between Information & Technology Services (ITS) staff and Planning & Transportation staff. While ITS provided technical development and GIS expertise, Planning & Transportation staff identified housing data needs and project goals.
