~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington has announced the highly anticipated return of the Outdoor Dining season for the downtown area in 2024. This year's program will see an expansion of outdoor dining options through the use of "parklets", which are parking spaces closed off by orange barriers directly outside participating businesses.
The decision to expand outdoor dining was made by the City Council on April 3, with a unanimous vote in favor of the program. The 2024 season will run from April 29 to November 4, with installation of barriers taking place between April 29 and 30. This expansion not only provides more seating options for diners, but also brings economic enhancement, vibrancy, and sustainability to Bloomington's pedestrian-friendly downtown.
Originally implemented in 2020 as a COVID-19 safety measure to alleviate capacity constraints for restaurants, the program has continued in 2023 and will now continue again this year. Mayor Thomson expressed his excitement for the return of outdoor dining on Kirkwood Avenue, stating that it has become a beloved summertime tradition for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to the outdoor dining program, Kirkwood Avenue will remain open to accommodate emergency vehicles and traffic rerouted due to the ongoing Clear Creek Reconstruction Project. This project aims to protect downtown Bloomington during extreme weather events.
Businesses interested in participating in the Parklet Program can now apply until April 15. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Special Projects Manager Chaz Mottinger at chaz.mottinger@bloomington.in.gov or by calling 812-349-3419. More information about associated fees and how to apply can be found at https://bton.in/ODD24.
The City of Bloomington is looking forward to another successful year of outdoor dining and encourages all businesses who wish to participate to submit their applications before the deadline. With expanded seating options and a vibrant downtown atmosphere, the 2024 Outdoor Dining season is sure to be a hit with residents and visitors alike.
