Bloomington: Additional Input Opportunities on College and Walnut Corridor Study Upcoming

Trending...
~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Planning and Transportation Department has announced that they will be hosting two public open house meetings in October to gather feedback on the corridor study of College Avenue and Walnut Street. The study, which was initiated by the City in 2023, aims to examine the existing areas of success, identify challenges, and suggest improvements for the southbound one-way College Avenue and northbound one-way Walnut Street from State Road 45/46 Bypass to Allen Street.

According to Ryan Robling, Planning Services Manager, the purpose of these meetings is to ensure that the final product reflects the needs and interests of the community. He emphasized the importance of consistent communication, active listening, and thoughtful engagement with the public when considering projects that have the potential to transform the city's built environment on a large scale.

The City is currently considering two design proposals from project consultant Toole Design Group, which were selected through a public Request For Information issued in 2022. Both proposals include potential changes to the corridor aimed at improving user safety, enhancing multimodal access, and increasing economic development opportunities. One proposal would keep both streets as one-way while the other would make them both two-way. Attendees at the open houses will be asked for their input on these proposals.

The two open house meetings will be held at Bloomington City Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m. Those who are unable to attend one meeting are encouraged to share their feedback at the other. Additionally, city staff will be hosting several pop-up events along the corridor from Oct. 29 to Nov. 4 in order to gather more public input.

For those who are unable to attend any of these events in person, there are still opportunities to share their thoughts on this project. They can email planning@bloomington.in.gov or complete an online form found on the corridor study's webpage at https://bton.in/VnxRS. The form will be open from Oct. 28 to Nov. 27, giving community members ample time to provide their feedback.

The City of Bloomington is committed to ensuring that the final decisions made regarding the College Avenue and Walnut Street corridor reflect the needs and desires of its residents. These public open house meetings and other opportunities for input are crucial in achieving this goal.
