~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington has announced the launch of the 2026 Downtown Activation Program, a partnership with Downtown Bloomington Inc. aimed at promoting downtown activity through various initiatives. The program, which includes outdoor dining, pop-up events, and seasonal activities, will kick off today on Thursday, April 9th and run through November 9th.
One of the main components of the program is outdoor dining, which will take place on Kirkwood Avenue. This street will continue to operate as a shared-street model in accordance with the Transportation Plan, allowing for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and motorists to share access.
As part of the outdoor dining component, participating restaurants will have the option to install parklets. These small outdoor seating areas will be created from on-street parking spaces and will not only expand dining options but also contribute to a vibrant and welcoming streetscape.

Some of the restaurants participating in this year's parklet program include BuffaLouie's at The Gables, Crazy Horse, Graduate by Hilton Bloomington, Lennie's Brewpub, Nick's English Hut, and The Orbit Room.
In addition to outdoor dining, the City and Downtown Business Inc. are also collaborating with local businesses and partners to support pop-up events. These events aim to provide regular opportunities for residents and visitors to gather and explore downtown.
The 2026 program also includes continued data collection and preparation for a study that will evaluate long-term design considerations for Kirkwood Avenue within the downtown network. This work is expected to be completed throughout the year.
It is important to note that this program is subject to annual review as required by ordinance. For more information on the 2026 Downtown Activation Program and its initiatives, visit bton.in/KrkFeb26.
